She wasn't sure where she was going. She wasn't even sure where she was. All Kenzie knew for sure was that she had to keep moving. She had to escape from that warehouse if she wanted to survive. She only hoped it wouldn't be too late for Jillian.
Kenzie ran faster than she ever had before in her life. She was so scared she'd run into another one of the Komodo Dragons. Drake and Destiny were out, but that didn't mean the others weren't close by.
She could hear Electra chasing after her, screaming at her to "come back here" as if she'd actually listen, but that only encouraged her to run faster. She was afraid she was completely lost until she turned a corner and found herself in the room full of stolen goods. It also had a hidden door that led to the hallway leading to her makeshift prison.
Kenzie now knew where she was going. She dashed up the stairs, hoping she didn't trip on the way in her high-heeled boots, and was relieved to see that the hidden door in the wall was open. Someone had undoubtedly forgotten to close it.
Kenzie burst through the door, and she heard Buck and Rocky on the balcony above the wrecked furniture drop their glasses and start shuffling toward the stairs. But Kenzie was already out the warehouse door, which had also thankfully had the boards left off of it. There must not have been a use for them with people inside guarding the place.
Kenzie jumped into her car, jammed the key in the ignition, shoved it into gear, and sped off toward Jillian's house. She wished she still had her cell phone with her so she could call the police, but there was no time. She hadn't retrieved her camera, either.
But there was no time to think about that now. She had to get to Jillian. She might already be too late.
When Kenzie finally arrived at Jillian's house, which was quite a distance away from the warehouse, she saw two police cruisers already there. One officer was dragging out a struggling and cuffed Drake while the other was carrying out a neurotic Destiny.
Kenzie jumped out of her car and headed inside, but Chief Hudson stopped her.
"Ms. Howell," he said, surprised. "I didn't expect to see you here. I figured you'd be at the warehouse."
Kenzie had had all she could take for one night. "For your information, I just barely escaped there with my life. I came here because those two you just arrested threatened my best friend's life. Is she okay?"
"Is your best friend Jillian Swansen, the owner of this house?"
"Yes. Where is she?"
"She's being taken to the Sacred Spleen now."
Kenzie felt her heart speed up even faster. She didn't think that was possible.
"Is she...?"
"She's alive, she just got knocked out. We got here just in time. She called us and said someone was breaking into her house, and that they had a gun."
"So, do you believe me now?"
James sighed. "I'm sorry about that, but you have to realize that there are other crimes that need my attention. Without solid evidence..."
"If you want solid evidence, go to the warehouse and look for my camera. It's full of pictures of the stolen goods. Which, FYI, are all stashed in a hidden room in the basement. The people of this town will be happy to get their belongings back, I'm sure. Or, if you need me to, I can show you where it is if you get those crooks out of there first."
"Ms. Howell, we'll need you to give us a statement."
"Fine, but I'm not doing anything until I get to the hospital and see Jillian."
"Go ahead, we have to wrap this up anyway, and now we have to go check out the warehouse."
"I'll be at the hospital then."
Kenzie turned on her heel and walked back to her car. She then drove toward the Sacred Spleen Memorial Hospital.
All the while, she was thinking of how grateful she was that Jillian was all right. She shuddered to think what would have happened had the police been any later.
Still, one problem still remained - the issue of Jillian herself, and the money she'd taken as a pay off. Could Kenzie actually turn her best friend in, especially after all she'd been through? She'd only been scared for her life, but still.
Kenzie was so confused. She couldn't in good conscience turn Jillian in, but she couldn't in good conscience keep quiet about it either. And if she didn't talk, the gang would. The police would have to investigate all claims, especially since Kenzie had mentioned her anonymous source that had given her all the gang information.
So it was with a heavy heart that she drove up to the hospital and parked, knowing that what she had to do was turn her best friend in.
