Sage was ecstatic to see her master return. Kenzie’s present to Hayden would have to wait, as she wanted some attention of her own. Even though she was a genius, Sage was still a dog.
In another hour, it was time to eat dinner. Hayden whipped up some fresh lobster, which he assured he hadn’t caught raw while in his wolf form, and the two dug in.
The couple conversed while they consumed the hearty red crustacean, which Hayden insisted was their Love Day dinner, hence the fanciness. Sage watched eagerly, hoping for a morsel. By the time the dishes were done and everything was cleaned up, it was dark outside. Though it was unseasonably warmer in Aurora Skies than Riverview at the moment, it was still technically winter, so days weren’t as long as in the spring and summer yet.
“What should we do now?” Kenzie inquired.
“I believe you said something about a present for me.”
“Oh, right.”
Kenzie thought she had some confidence invoked in herself, but now she was feeling coy again.
“Why are you blushing?” Hayden wanted to know.
“I, uh…I don’t know if you’ll like the surprise.”
“Hey.” Hayden enveloped her in a reassuring hug. “You didn’t have to get me anything at all. Like I said, you being here is the perfect gift. I’ll love it whatever it is, but again, it wasn’t a requirement. Usually it’s the guy that gets the girl something for Love Day.”
Kenzie smiled in Hayden’s arms. Besides, what she’d gotten him wasn’t exactly something he’d never seen before…sort of.
“Why don’t you get ready for bed?” she suggested.
“Now? It’s barely eight-thirty.”
“It’s part of the present.”
“Ohhhh…”
Hayden made a funny noise of approval as Kenzie stuck her tongue out at him playfully. But he complied and made his way to the master bedroom. Kenzie was glad that he and Ellis had changed the sheets since their parents had last used them.
She trotted into the master bathroom and went to work preparing her surprise. When she looked in the mirror, she almost snorted at herself. This was so unlike her. Never before had she done anything so risqué where her wardrobe was concerned. But Hayden Howland just seemed to bring out the best in her. He made her more daring, more passionate, more confident, and more determined. She’d once thought that someone else had brought her out of her shell, but she was wrong. It was Hayden who’d done that. The least he deserved was some way of her showing her gratitude. She figured this gift would be the perfect interchange.
Still, when she entered the bedroom wearing her robe and saw Hayden leaned back against the pillows with his eyes closed, in nothing but boxer shorts, her heart skipped a beat.
Upon hearing her approach, his eyes fluttered open and he took her in.
“Nice robe,” he teased.
“Nice boxers,” Kenzie replied in the same mischievous demeanor. “The present’s under the robe.”
Hayden lifted an eyebrow (why was that so irresistible?) and a grin spread across his handsome face. Kenzie bit her lip and felt her cheeks heating up again. She had to remind herself to breathe.
“I see part of the present,” Hayden interjected her thoughts. “You’re still wearing the earrings I gave you.”
Kenzie reached up and touched the pearly pink gems dangling from her ears. “Yes, and I’m wearing the necklace too. I love them.”
“I’m glad.”
“I guess I’ve kept you waiting for your present long enough.”
With one heavy sigh, Kenzie tugged on the sash of her robe and it gave way. Hot pink and black lace spilled out, and she shrugged the rest of the robe off so that it cascaded into a puddle on the floor.
It took every bit of courage not to shield herself in this provocative attire. She’d never dressed like this before, and certainly never put it on display in front of anyone.
“Wow,” was Hayden’s response.
“Uh…is that a good wow or a bad wow?” Kenzie questioned.
“Duh. That’s a very good wow. Kenzie, just…damn. You should wear things like that more often. I was going to tell you how hot you looked in the college wardrobe you had to wear for your undercover case in Lucky Palms. This? Just…I’m speechless.”
“So, you like it?”
“Definitely. And it was certainly a surprise. I wasn’t expecting that at all, though your shyness makes more sense now. Truthfully, I’d say you look sexy, but really, you look beautiful.”
Kenzie smiled and Hayden gestured for her to join him on the bed.
Once she was nestled next to him, Hayden held Kenzie tightly and intertwined his fingers with hers.
“You are so beautiful,” he said lovingly as he gazed into her eyes.
“And you’re so good to me,” Kenzie beamed. “Thanks for making this the best Love Day ever.”
“You’ve seen nothing yet. I hope you were prepared for the consequences of wearing that outfit.”
“Consequences? Like what?”
“Oh, don’t play innocent, Kenzie. I know you’re smarter than that. You had some ulterior motives, didn’t you?”
“Uh…maybe. But remember, you do owe me for that roller coaster ride.”
“I thought the romantic ferris wheel made up for that.”
“Not quite. It was still too high.”
Hayden just laughed whole-heartedly as he attempted to tickle Kenzie playfully. She instinctively turned away, laughing. Now she was right where Hayden wanted her, as evidenced by him leaning down to plant a passionate kiss on her.
“By the way,” he said softly, “you’ve made this the best Love Day for me, too.”
“I’m glad. I didn’t really do all that much.”
“You did plenty. And the day isn’t over yet.”
Kenzie’s heart began to race as Hayden climbed on top of her, his eyes filled with a mixture of passion and desire tinged with some lust.
His fingers brushing through her hair, Kenzie’s eyes fluttered closed as she began to caress Hayden’s back when he leaned down further and kissed her with much more fervor. His touches and lips both became more fierce, more determined, and Kenzie willingly let herself go.
It had been so long since she’d been in Hayden’s arms, since they’d physically been together in multiple ways. And it was time to rectify that and make up for lost time.
Moans began to escape from her throat as Hayden continued to ravish her relentlessly. It was getting very heated in that small master bedroom.
Funny, as she was thinking that, Hayden said, somewhat out of breath, “Just so you know, since I technically own this cabin, even if it’s just half, it hasn’t been christened.”
“What about your parents?”
“Gross. I don’t want to think about that now. But no, they had me and Ellis with them most of the time. And we have very strong ears, so they wouldn’t have been able to, uh, hide that…”
“I get it.”
“So, yeah, under my ownership, this place hasn’t been christened.”
“What do you say we change that?”
“I say hell yeah.”
And then Hayden resumed kissing Kenzie, but he didn’t contain the smooches to her lips. Instead, he kept moving his lips down, lower and lower, until he was grazing her inner thigh. Kenzie sucked in her breath at this new and exciting experience.
Hayden’s affection didn’t cease. In fact, if anything, it became more erotic. She’d never experienced things like this before, but now she understood what the fuss was all about in the romance novels she read. The effect Hayden had on her, the way he made her feel, was, for lack of a better word, supernatural.
In fact, it was so powerful, that Sage came barreling into the room when she heard Kenzie let out a shriek, confusing the sound for agony rather than pleasure.
“Sage, I’m fine,” she said to her dog. “Go back out there.”
Sage cocked her head to one side, obviously wondering what the hell her master was doing in such a revealing getup with her boyfriend’s head below her stomach. But she knew that Kenzie was the alpha, so she turned around and trotted out of the bedroom. Hayden got up to close the door, and Kenzie stopped him before he got back onto the bed.
“Wait,” she said. “That deserves reciprocation.”
“What the…” Hayden didn’t get his question out before Kenzie was kneeling on the floor and returning the favor.
“Shit,” Hayden groaned through gritted teeth. This was another first for Kenzie. What was it about this man that made her unleash her inner animal?
Of course, it wouldn’t be their ritual without Hayden giving into his canine instincts. It was better and more exotic than Kenzie remembered.
But this wasn’t the romantic aspect that the couple wanted to enjoy for Love Day. That part came next, in the midst of clothes being shed, and it was an act of mind-numbing, full-blown passion. Kenzie held nothing back, and neither did Hayden. There was no need to. No one was around for miles, and it was just the two of them.
Enthralled in the throes of passion, time seemed to stand still as the mates performed their amorous ritual of allure.
When it was over, Kenzie looked at Hayden and said, “I guess this time we actually get to sleep together.”
“What?”
“I mean, last time, we jumped up and had to get to my graduation party. This time, we’ll actually be able to sleep in the same bed after our coital activities.”
“Good point. I can live with that.”
“I can too.”
Hayden held Kenzie in his arms once again, and in no time, the two drifted off to sleep. And as she did so, Kenzie realized something – she was beginning to understand, for the first time, despite what she’d thought in the past, what it meant to truly, unmistakably, irrevocably, be in love.
