Chapter 4 - Concerns

When Kenzie woke up, it was only 8 in the morning. She groaned and rolled over to get some extra sleep, but she knew that would be impossible with the sun shining through the blinds. Then she remembered that she would have to call her "partner" before she began her plans for the day. She was sure Tara had already filled out the appropriate paperwork, since she'd said it wouldn't take longer than 24 hours.

With another groan, she pushed herself off the bed. The weather in Twinbrook tended to be nice throughout the year, where the normal attire could be capris or jeans and a short-sleeved shirt, sometimes with a jacket. Kenzie would have to wash yesterday's nice leather jacket (and jeans and shirt) after her adventure with ashes, though she would have to wear the shoes again since she hadn't thought to pack an extra pair. She put on a white jacket, flared jeans, and then fixed her hair and applied her makeup (no harm in bringing out her natural beauty, but not looking like a clown).

After that, Kenzie decided she had better have some sort of breakfast. No point in working on an empty stomach. So she walked to the main lobby, where off to the side there was a cafe. She grabbed a bowl and poured some milk and cereal into it. She then sat at a table next to the wall and thought about the coming day's activities as she ate.

After she got in touch with Logan (why her?!), she planned to go talk to some of the victims. The one good thing about having Logan around would be that she wouldn't have to drive around and get lost trying to find the right locations. Still, she'd rather do that and eventually find the places on her own than have a partner. Especially a bounty hunter.

As she was thinking this, she felt her cell phone vibrate in her pocket. She withdrew it and saw Logan's number pop up. She answered it with a cold, "Hello?"

"Good morning to you too. I just got off the phone with Tara, and I'm on my way to the police station to sign the papers. What do you say we meet at the hotel around 10? I'll pick you up, and you tell me where we need to go."

She had to ride in his car with him too? What next?

But on the plus side, at least it would be his gas that had to be paid for and not hers.

"That sounds fine. I'm in room 108, so just come by when you're ready."

"Will do. Later."

"Bye."

Kenzie hung up the phone and looked heavenward. She hoped Tara knew what she was getting herself into, pairing Kenzie up with a partner, and a bounty hunter at that.

After throwing away her Styrofoam bowl and plastic spoon, Kenzie returned to her hotel room. It was only 9:10 now, leaving her almost an hour to kill before Logan showed up. For lack of anything better to do, she pulled out her laptop, set it on the small table by the window, and logged into her instant messenger. She was glad to see that her best friend, Jillian, was online.

WolfWoman: Jill, are you there?

LifesABeach: I'm here! How are you girl?

WolfWoman: Not too bad. But you'll never guess what happened.

LifesABeach: I probably won't. So let me have it. And what's the latest case?

WolfWoman: It has to do with the latest case. Someone's been setting fires in Twinbrook, but no one can find any evidence to arrest anyone. The chief actually stuck me with a partner!

LifesABeach: ...Why?

Even Jillian knew that sticking Kenzie with a partner wouldn't be the best thing to do. Unless that partner happened to be her best friend. And even then it would depend on the circumstances. Kenzie wanted to be more carefree, yes, but there was a limit.

WolfWoman: Oh it's worse than that. This guy isn't even a licensed detective or cop. He's a bounty hunter. He claims that since he's lived here forever, he wants to help put a stop to these arsons. And the chief actually agreed with him, so she's got him signing all these papers to basically make him an intern. He'll be following me around and everything else. How am I supposed to solve this case with him following me everywhere?

LifesABeach: Wow, a bounty hunter? You'll end up killing the guy.

WolfWoman: That's what I'm afraid of. And I really don't feel like going to jail.

LifesABeach: Is he cute?

WolfWoman: Jill...

LifesABeach: Just kidding!

WolfWoman: But since you ask, yes, I'm sorry to say, the guy is very cute. Which will make this even harder.

LifesABeach: You can always try to seduce him and then tell him to back off.

WolfWoman: Fat chance of that happening. And I use the term fat loosely.

LifesABeach: Oh stop. You're not fat. You have great curves. If some guy's too stupid to see who you really are, then tell him to shove it.

WolfWoman: Thanks for the advice. I may go all Sim Fu on him like I did that one gangster.

LifesABeach: I still wish I could have seen that. Hilarious!

Just then, there was a knock at the door.

WolfWoman: Jill, I think he's here. I'll talk to you later.

LifesABeach: Write back! I want to know everything! Well, everything you can tell me without breaking the privacy rules.

WolfWoman: Sure. Bye!

Kenzie closed her laptop and answered the door. There was Logan, looking just as handsome as he had yesterday. Kenzie tried not to take Jillian's suggestion of seducing him to heart (despite her friend's insistence that woohoo is one of the most effective methods to lose weight).

"Hey!" he greeted her with his award-winning smile. "You ready to go?"

"Yeah, let me just grab my kit."

Kenzie grabbed her kit from the coat alcove and walked out the door, locking it behind her. She then climbed into the front seat of Logan's truck. Clutching her kit tightly, her mind was buzzing with questions and concerns. But the biggest concern was how in the world today was going to go.
